Why are they bringing this up now?
Sexual assault has far reaching and profound impacts on the lives of many people who have experienced this crime. It is only when a survivor becomes safe from the abuse that they may feel able to talk about it. This may take time and the support and understanding of non-offending family members or friends is crucial in this process. Sometimes the death of the offender or a change in personal circumstances may facilitate a disclosure from a victim/survivor many years down the track.
