Dealing with flashbacks and nightmares
Many survivors experience flashbacks and nightmares. Intrusive reminders of the assault may be so vivid that they may feel real. Whilst these are normal reactions to traumatic events, it can be very distressing. If you are experiencing a flashback it is important to remind yourself that you are safe in the present moment and it is not happening now. Refocus on your surroundings by identifying things that you can see, hear and touch around you. This may help to separate the past from the present.
